WooCommerce has more crypto payment plugins than any other store platform, and they work in very different ways. Some are front ends for a payment processor that holds your money and pays you later. Others connect to software you run, so coins go straight to your wallet. This guide compares six real options on the facts that matter, as of September 2026. We make Payfim, one of the six - so we have kept to published facts, and we say plainly where the others are stronger.
How we compared them
- Cost: the published fee per payment and any license cost.
- Custody: whether the payment goes to your wallet or to a provider first.
- Onboarding: whether you need to pass business verification.
- Coins and extras: stablecoins, Lightning, fiat settlement.
- WooCommerce fit: support for the Checkout block and signs of active maintenance on WordPress.org.

1. BTCPay Server - best free option for Bitcoin and Lightning
BTCPay Server is free, MIT-licensed open-source software, and its WooCommerce plugin charges nothing because, as the plugin page puts it, it does not process your payments. Lightning works out of the box, and the plugin supports the WooCommerce Checkout block.
Pros: no fees or license cost, self-custody, verification with your own Bitcoin node, strong community. Cons: you need a BTCPay Server instance - Docker on a VPS or a third-party host - and the plugin requires PHP 8.0+ and WordPress 6.2+. Altcoins and stablecoins are community add-ons rather than core features. Read our Payfim vs BTCPay Server comparison for detail.
2. Payfim - best for self-hosted, no-fee multi-coin payments
The Payfim WooCommerce plugin connects your store to a Payfim gateway you install on your own hosting. Customers pay your wallet directly in any of 16 coin and network options, including USDT on TRON and Ethereum, USDC, Bitcoin, Solana and Monero. It supports the Checkout block and classic checkout, declares HPOS compatibility, and works with WooCommerce 7.0+ and WordPress 6.0+.
Pros: no transaction fees, no KYC, runs on ordinary shared hosting, stablecoins built in, branded checkout on your domain. Cons: it is paid ($20 one-time, 12 months of updates included), it is not open source, it has no Lightning support and no fiat conversion, and it checks payments through public blockchain APIs rather than your own node.
3. Blockonomics - simple direct-to-wallet Bitcoin
Blockonomics watches your wallet and sends payments straight into it, without you running a server. Its WordPress.org listing names Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and USDT on Ethereum (ERC20) as supported.
Pros: non-custodial, no server to maintain, quick setup. Cons: a 1% fee after the first 10 payments, a narrower coin list, and no TRON or Solana stablecoin rails.
4. NOWPayments - widest coin choice
NOWPayments advertises support for 300+ cryptocurrencies and can auto-convert payments into the coin you want to receive. NOWPayments distributes its own WooCommerce plugin as a download from its website; a separate plugin on WordPress.org that connects to NOWPayments is published by a third-party developer, so check which one you are installing. NOWPayments describes its processing as non-custodial: payments are forwarded to your payout wallet after the fee.
Pros: huge coin list, conversion, no server. Cons: 1% per payment (1.5% with conversion or if the customer pays the fee), plus a second network fee for the payout. More in Payfim vs NOWPayments.
5. CoinGate - fiat settlement for European businesses
CoinGate is a hosted processor that can settle to EUR, USD or GBP bank accounts, with Lightning enabled by default. Its WooCommerce plugin added Checkout block support in version 2.3.0 (January 2025) and received a further update in July 2025.
Pros: fiat settlement, rate lock at payment, Lightning, regulated onboarding. Cons: 1% processing plus payout fees, weekly settlement on the Standard plan, and full business verification required. See Payfim vs CoinGate.
6. BitPay Checkout - established processor with bank settlement
BitPay's WooCommerce plugin is actively maintained, supports the Checkout block, and connects to a BitPay merchant account that settles daily in seven fiat currencies or crypto. BitPay accepts 100+ cryptocurrencies and Lightning.
Pros: bank settlement, compliance handled, wide coin support. Cons: 2% + $0.25 per transaction at under $500,000 a month (lower at higher volumes), plus merchant verification and approved processing limits. Details in Payfim vs BitPay.
How much setup does each one need?
| Plugin | What you set up | Ongoing work |
|---|---|---|
| BTCPay Server | A BTCPay Server instance (Docker on a VPS, node hardware or a third-party host), then the plugin | Server updates, backups, node storage |
| Payfim | Upload the gateway to your hosting, run the installer, add wallet addresses, install the plugin | A cron job every minute; optional updates |
| Blockonomics | An account and your wallet details, then the plugin | None beyond the plugin |
| NOWPayments | An account, payout wallet and API keys, then the plugin | None beyond the plugin |
| CoinGate | An account plus business verification, then the plugin | Settlements and payouts |
| BitPay | A merchant account plus verification and approved limits, then the plugin | Settlements and limits |
Self-hosted options cost less per sale but ask for a little more technical care. Hosted processors cost more per sale but leave you with almost nothing to maintain. There is no wrong answer - only a trade-off that suits your store.
What about Coinbase Commerce and CoinPayments?
Coinbase Commerce was a popular free, self-custodial option, but Coinbase merged it into Coinbase Business and the Commerce portal became inaccessible after March 31, 2026. Coinbase Business is custodial and, as of September 2026, available only in the US and Singapore. See our Coinbase Commerce page.
CoinPayments still offers a WooCommerce plugin, but its WordPress.org listing showed a warning that it had not been tested with the last three major WordPress releases when we checked, and its fee page lists processing "starting at 3%". Compare it in Payfim vs CoinPayments.
Questions to ask before installing any crypto plugin
- Who controls the receiving address? If it is the provider, your money depends on their account terms until it is paid out.
- What happens on an underpayment? Look for a clear status such as On hold rather than a silently completed order.
- Is the order amount created server-side? A checkout that trusts the browser for the price can be manipulated.
- How are callbacks verified? Signed webhooks, re-checked against the provider or gateway, are the safer design.
- Which networks are offered for USDT? TRON and Ethereum addresses are not interchangeable; the checkout should make the network obvious.
How to choose the right plugin
- You need dollars or euros in the bank: BitPay or CoinGate.
- You want the most coins with no server: NOWPayments.
- You only care about Bitcoin and Lightning, and can run a VPS: BTCPay Server.
- You want stablecoins and several chains, no fees, and you are on shared hosting: Payfim.
- You want simple Bitcoin with no server and do not mind 1%: Blockonomics.
Whichever you pick, test with a small real payment, check that the order status changes automatically, and decide ahead of time how you will handle underpayments and refunds. Our guide to secure crypto checkout best practices is a useful checklist.
