Crypto is a natural fit for hosting companies. Clients are spread across many countries, many cannot use cards or PayPal reliably, and invoices repeat every month or year. WHMCS supports crypto through several gateway modules, but they work very differently. This guide compares seven options as of September 2026. Payfim is one of them and is our product, so we have stuck to published facts and noted where the alternatives are the stronger choice.
Why fees matter more for WHMCS
A store pays a processor fee once per order. A hosting company pays it on every renewal invoice, for the life of the client. A 1% fee on a $10 monthly plan is $1.20 per client per year; with 1,000 such clients, that is $1,200 a year, every year. At 2% plus a fixed per-transaction fee, small monthly invoices get proportionally more expensive. That is why many hosts look at self-hosted or direct-to-wallet options first. Our post on crypto payments for web hosting companies covers the business side in more depth.
WHMCS crypto gateways compared
| Gateway | Type | Fee (Sept 2026) | Funds go to | Verification | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Payfim | Self-hosted | None; $15 one-time module license | Your wallet | None | 16 coin options incl. USDT TRC20, XMR; WHMCS 7.10-8.x |
| BTCPay Server | Self-hosted, open source | Free, no fees | Your wallet | None | Bitcoin-first; plugin tested on WHMCS 8.13 |
| BitPay | Hosted processor | 2% + $0.25 under $500k/month | BitPay, then daily settlement | Business verification | Module documented in WHMCS docs; fiat settlement |
| CoinGate | Hosted processor | 1% + payout fees | CoinGate, then weekly settlement | Business verification | EUR/USD/GBP settlement, Lightning |
| NOWPayments | Hosted gateway | 1%; 1.5% with conversion | Forwarded to your payout wallet | Only if a transaction is flagged (crypto-only) | Large coin list; check WHMCS version support |
| CoinPayments | Hosted processor | Listed "starting at 3%" | CoinPayments balance or forwarded | Compliance verification | Module requires WHMCS 9.0+ and PHP 8.1+ |
| Blockonomics | Hosted, direct to wallet | 1% after first 10 payments | Your wallet | Not stated | BTC, BCH, USDT (ERC20) |
What each option could cost over three years
An illustration: a host with 500 clients on $10 monthly plans, all paying in crypto, bills $180,000 over three years in 18,000 invoices. Using published September 2026 rates and ignoring network fees:
| Gateway | Approximate 3-year cost |
|---|---|
| Payfim | $15 license, plus $18 if you renew updates for years two and three |
| BTCPay Server | $0 software; server cost if you do not already run one (BTCPay's docs estimate $10-70 a month for a VPS) |
| NOWPayments (1%) | About $1,800, plus payout network fees |
| CoinGate (1% + crypto payout 0.5%) | About $2,700, plus EUR 0.50 per payout |
| CoinPayments (from 3%) | About $5,400 or more |
| BitPay (2% + $0.25) | About $8,100 |
Real numbers depend on how many clients pay in crypto, your negotiated rates and whether you need fiat settlement. The point is the shape: on recurring billing, percentage fees keep growing while a one-time license does not.
Payfim - best for no fees on recurring invoices
The Payfim WHMCS module adds a "Pay with Crypto" button to unpaid invoices and connects to a Payfim gateway on your own server. When the blockchain confirms a payment, the callback verifies the signed webhook, re-checks the invoice with your gateway, runs WHMCS' own duplicate checks and records the payment with the transaction hash. Renewals unsuspend services just as card payments do.
Pros: no transaction fees, no KYC, payments straight to your wallets, USDT on TRON and Ethereum plus 14 other options, unencrypted PHP you can audit, runs on shared hosting. Cons: $15 one-time license (updates after the first year are optional at $9/year), no Lightning, no fiat settlement, not open source, and it currently lists WHMCS 7.10-8.x - check this matches your install.
BTCPay Server - best free option for Bitcoin
BTCPay Server maintains a WHMCS plugin in its official GitHub organization under the MIT license, tested on WHMCS 8.13 according to its README. It connects WHMCS to your own BTCPay Server instance.
Pros: free, open source, no fees, self-custody, Lightning available on the BTCPay side. Cons: you must run BTCPay Server (Docker on a VPS, 2 GB RAM and 80 GB storage with pruning as a minimum) or use a third-party host; Bitcoin is the focus and other coins rely on community plugins. See Payfim vs BTCPay Server.
BitPay - the option documented by WHMCS
WHMCS documents a BitPay payment gateway module in its own documentation, so it is familiar to many hosting teams. BitPay settles daily to your bank in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, NZD or MXN, or in crypto.
Pros: fiat settlement, compliance handled, 100+ coins, Lightning. Cons: 2% + $0.25 per transaction under $500,000 a month, which weighs heavily on small monthly invoices; business verification required; higher fees may apply to high-risk industries. More in Payfim vs BitPay.
CoinGate - fiat settlement in Europe
CoinGate offers a free WHMCS plugin and settles in EUR, USD or GBP, or lets you keep crypto. Exchange rates are locked at the moment of payment.
Pros: bank settlement, rate lock, Lightning enabled by default. Cons: 1% processing, plus EUR 0.50 + 0.5% (or 1.5% with conversion) on crypto payouts; weekly settlement on the Standard plan; company documents required. See Payfim vs CoinGate.
NOWPayments - many coins, forwarded to your wallet
NOWPayments offers a WHMCS plugin and routes payments to your payout wallet after its fee. It advertises a very large coin list and optional auto-conversion.
Pros: broad coin support, conversion, no server to run, KYC only in rare flagged cases for crypto-only merchants. Cons: 1% or 1.5% on every renewal plus a payout network fee. When we checked, NOWPayments' own WHMCS plugin page mentioned compatibility up to WHMCS 7.9, so confirm support for your WHMCS version with them before installing. See Payfim vs NOWPayments.
CoinPayments - for WHMCS 9 users
CoinPayments publishes a WHMCS module that requires WHMCS 9.0+ and PHP 8.1+, and it can hold received crypto in your CoinPayments wallet or auto-convert and sweep it.
Pros: supports the latest WHMCS, 40+ coins, conversion options. Cons: its fee page lists processing "starting at 3%" as of September 2026, and compliance verification is part of setup. See Payfim vs CoinPayments.
Blockonomics - simple Bitcoin to your wallet
Blockonomics publishes a WHMCS plugin on GitHub that sends payments straight to your wallet, supporting Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and USDT on Ethereum.
Pros: non-custodial, no server to run. Cons: 1% after the first 10 payments and a narrower coin list.
Which WHMCS crypto gateway should you choose?
- You need fiat for payroll and accounts: BitPay or CoinGate.
- You run WHMCS 9: check CoinPayments or another module that lists WHMCS 9 support; Payfim currently lists 7.10-8.x.
- You want free Bitcoin with your own node and can manage a VPS: BTCPay Server.
- You want no fees on renewals, stablecoins and several chains, with no extra server: Payfim.
- You want the biggest coin list without hosting anything: NOWPayments.
What about underpayments and duplicate payments?
Hosting clients often pay from exchanges, which can deduct a withdrawal fee from the amount sent. A good WHMCS crypto module should never mark such an invoice fully paid. In Payfim, a payment short by more than the tolerance (0.5% by default) is flagged as underpaid and the invoice stays unpaid until you decide what to do. On the other side, if a client pays twice, WHMCS' duplicate transaction check stops the same transaction being applied twice; the extra transfer lands in your wallet without touching any invoice, so you can refund or credit it.
Setting up crypto in WHMCS: a quick checklist
- Decide which coins your clients actually use - see how to choose coins to accept.
- Install your chosen gateway and activate it in Setup → Payments → Payment Gateways.
- Pay a small test invoice on your own client account and confirm it is marked Paid with a transaction ID.
- Check Billing → Gateway Log for errors.
- Write a short policy on underpayments and refunds, since blockchain payments cannot be charged back.
